Have great time on a family walking break with a Steam Train Special.
There are two to choose from Peak Rail and (scroll down to) Churnet Valley
Steam Train Special Peak Rail
Enjoy two days walking in the green valleys of the Rivers Wye and Derwent and catch a steam train. On one day you will wander around the green hillsides of the Wye valley and estate farmland of Haddon and Chatsworth. On the other day you will have a Steam Train special walk. There is something very emotive about watching a steam train in action with plumes of smoke and a toot toot which reverberates all around. Running beside the River Derwent is a stretch of line belonging to Peak Rail (www.peakrail.co.uk) where most weekends you can reminisce and recall the wonderful days of steam and the wonders of The Railway Children. This walk gives you the opportunity to take a short steam train ride, to watch the engines in action and then walk back approximately 5.5 miles along a stretch of the Derwent Valley Heritage Way to return to your car. This moderate walk of approximately 5 ½ miles starts by meeting at Rowsley South Station, the northern terminus of Peak Rail. After watching the tender being coupled up to carriages, you'll climb on board for a trip back in time with a steam train ride down to Matlock. Once in the town you'll be given a short tour followed by an opportunity to picnic in the fabulous Hall Leys Park. You will then return to Rowsley with a leisurely walk along a stretch of the Derwent Valley Heritage Way following the River Derwent. |

On the other day you will have a Steam Train special with a ride on a train with a stroll back. Watch the trains in action with plumes of smoke and a toot toot echoing all around. You will have the opportunity to travel between the stations of Froghall and Cheddleton on a steam train ride and then walk back from whence you came.
