Follow in the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie Walk
|
|
A four-day break combining 3 days of walking with a Bonnie Prince Charlie experience. Walk along the Bonnie Prince Charlie Way from Ashbourne to Derby and onwards to Swarkestone. Timed to coincide with a commemorative parade in Derby and a battle re-enactment. Relive the walk that Bonnie Prince Charlie and his men would have taken as they advanced to London to try and claim the crown for the Stuarts. These were the final days of his march before retreating to Scotland. Would you have taken the same route as he did through the countryside rather than along the main highway. The route passes through rich agricultural lowlands with rolling hills. You'll have chance to explore villages like Osmaston and Shirley with cottages built of red brick with occasional half timbered walls and thatch roof. There will be free day on Saturday for you to enjoy a lively parade in the city. On Sunday a final stretch of walking to watch a re-enactment near Swarkestone Bridge which marked the most southerly point the army got to before turning back. The Bridge is a monument itself; the longest stone bridge in England and crosses the River Trent and surrounding marshes and narrow. … many modern day motorists have even been known to hesitate about crossing it ! You will have a single base in Derby and be transferred each day to the walk. You can choose from our selection of homely and stylish B & B's and hotels to stay at. Your hosts will give you the local tips where to go for evening meals. |
