Leaf Peeping in the Forest

Taking an interest in trees is timely as 2011 is the International Year of Forests. What better way to mark the occasion than by joining us for a relaxing 2 days of walking in the bold environmental project, the National Forest.

A two day break to admire the dramatic changes of colour of trees in the Autumn. Enjoy a guided walk in the National Forest where you can watch the season advance. You will experience the variety of young plantations and ancient woods as you stroll along leafy paths.

Bring your camera to capture the colours of the foliage as it changes to the reds, yellows and gold of Autumn. The walks are centred around the pretty south Derbyshire village of Ticknall surrounded by a blend of new and mature woodlands. It was once known as “Paraffin City” due to the estate owners refusing to have gas piped through the village. The estate being the nearby Calke Abbey (though not an abbey) where you can see two grand old Oak trees and other examples of a fragile woodland landscape.

You will also be taken through areas that have been planted in the last 10 -12 years with young trees like sweet chestnut and walnut.
